Buy To Let Investors - In or Out?

Maternity and Paternity Pay and Leave Update

Changes to Inheritance Tax for Married Couples and Civil Partners
Patrick Hamilton, Tax Expert at Bentleys Chartered Accountantsis advising individuals to be aware of the recent Government announcement about an intended change to the inheritance tax (IHT) nil rate band of £300,000 for married couples and civil partners. It is soon to be the case that when one of the partners dies, the remainder of the IHT nil rate band that is unused can be transferred to the surviving spouse. The change will also be applied retroactively, so anyone whose partner died before the announcement, and who themselves survived until 9 October 2007 is eligible for a backdated transfer.

Chancellor’s Budget 2007 – “Draconian” changes to CGT
A major reform to capital gains tax announced in the pre-budget statement will be introduced via a single rate of 18 per cent from 6th April 2008. According to the Chancellor this “aims to ensure a more sustainable system that is straightforward and internationally competitive.” As part of this new system the annual exempt amount (currently £9,200) will remain in place, but taper relief and indexation allowance will be withdrawn.
